An Ontario man was convicted Monday in federal court of possession of child pornography and attempting to engage a child in sexual activity when he traveled to Atlanta in 2007.

Brian Schumaker, 54, faces life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for traveling across state lines to have sex with a child under 12.

A federal jury convicted Schumaker after a four-day trial.

“We will continue to investigate and prosecute those who choose to commit these types of crimes in this district,” U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said.

Schumaker was arrested in Alpharetta on Aug. 3, 2007 after using the Internet to set up a meeting with who he thought was a young girl in Atlanta and then driving to Georgia from Mississagua, Ontario.

According to court testimony, Schumaker went to Alpharetta to meet someone he thought was the mother of an 11-year-old girl.

FBI agents and Alpharetta authorities arrested Schumaker when he got to that location.

Authorities seized Schumaker’s laptop and mobile phone and found child pornography and images of sexual abuse, rape and molestation of young children.

According to court testimony, Schumaker boasted about having sex with girls as young as 12.
