Man charged with making false reports from hotel room that burned
A 32-year-old man was charged with making several false calls to 911 from a Days Inn hotel room that later was set on fire, police said.
John Blanton was in the Fulton County Jail Thursday on charges of filing a false report of a crime and and unlawful conduct of 911 calls. His bond was $1,500.
Three calls to 911 were placed before the room was set on fire but authorities don't have any evidence yet that Blanton set it, according to Atlanta Fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige.
Bundrige said no one was injured but the fire destroyed room 336 at the Days Inn in the 1700 block of Northside Drive Wednesday evening.
According to Bundrige, Blanton called 911 from that room three times -- at 5:38 at 7:07 p.m., and at 7:52 p.m -- but simply hung up. No one was there when authorities went to the room.
A woman place a fourth call from the room to report it on fire. As before, no one was in the room when fire fighters arrived.
Room 336 "was a total loss; everything was burned,” Bundrige said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
