A man is believed to have drowned Saturday evening in Lake Lanier, but divers were unable to locate his body.

Friends of the man, whose name was not released, told investigators he was last seen wading in the water near Buford Dam Road in Buford, not far from the dam, Lt. Eric Eberly with the Gwinnett County fire department said.

Firefighters were called to the lake shortly after 8 p.m., about two hours after the man was last seen, Eberly said late Saturday. The man did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket, Eberly said. It was not immediately clear why the man's friends may have waited to call 911.

The Hall County dive team assisted Gwinnett's swift water rescuers in the search, but the man was not located. The search was called off late Saturday night and is expected to resume at 9 a.m. Sunday.
