A lockdown at two Gwinnett County schools ended around 4 p.m. when a man threatening suicide surrendered to police.

Collins Hill High School and Walnut Grove Elementary were on lockdown for about three hours Tuesday afternoon, keeping students and teachers inside both schools inside beyond regular dismissal times.

The incident began as a domestic dispute Tuesday morning between an 18-year-old man, and his girlfriend, police said at the scene. By early afternoon, that dispute escalated, with the man going outside of the home and threatening to kill himself, Cpl. Edwin Ritter with Gwinnett County police said.

The man, whose name was not released, had a gun and a large knife and was wandering in the woods less than a quarter-mile from Collins Hill High School, police said.

The schools, located on Taylor Road, were placed on lockdown to the man's close proximity, Ritter said. A reverse 911 call was used to alert residents in the area of the situation, police said.

The man surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The man's gun was loaded and he had extra ammunition, police said Tuesday night.

"There are no charges pending against him," Cpl. Jake Smith said Tuesday night.
