Lilburn Police Chief John Davidson was fired Monday after five years in the position.

City Manager Bill Johnsa announced the dismissal Tuesday but provided no reason for the action.

"We appreciate the contributions Chief Davidson has made to the department over the past five years and wish him all the best," Johnsa said in a statement.

Mayor Diana Preston said she and the City Council supported Johnsa's decision.

"This was not a council vote," she said. "[Johnsa] recommended and notified us by e-mail and we all responded back. We didn't have any questions about it."

In the interim, Deputy Chief Bruce Hedley will serve as acting police chief until a replacement can be named. The Lilburn Police Department has 25 full-time sworn officers.

Davidson, 54, assumed the chief's position in February 2006, replacing Ron Houck, who held the Lilburn post for 27 years.

Davidson is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business and public administration from the University of Tennessee.

"He has made a lot of contributions to the Lilburn community," Preston said. "He's been a very innovative chief and made a positive difference."

Davidson did not respond to a request for comment.
