As a pediatric ER physician, Martin Belson spends his time treating sick children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. His work inspired him to start Kids Against Childhood Cancer for his two daughters, Brooke and Anna, and 14 of their friends.
“With KACC, I thought it would be a great way for them to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer,” said Belson. Additionally, the organization, which is managed and run by the girls, “would teach them about teamwork, organization structures, leadership, and giving back,” he added.
KACC’s goal is to meet the needs of local children who receive treatment at the Aflac Cancer Center at Scottish Rite. Hosting fundraising events such as movie nights, car washes, and a Stone Mountain climb has helped KACC raise approximately $11,000 to contribute toward CHOA’s Wish List.
Along with patients’ requests, the wish list also contains items that are out of CHOA’s budget, but can be purchased upon receiving donations. After KACC’s first fundraiser in 2010, the girls were able to donate video games, CDs, and books to the patients.
KACC’s most recent event, the Stone Mountain Climb, raised more than $7,000. The money will help purchase family education resource materials, iTunes gift cards, and more.
“To see these girls come up with fundraisers and give back in such an enthusiastic way to our kids who are affected by cancer is inspiring,” said Senior Program Coordinator Jessica Houston. “It’s great to see the next generation learning about giving back and getting involved in their community.”
The girls hope to spread the word of KACC to get more kids involved towards the mission. “We want to have more fundraisers so more people give to KACC,” added Brooke Belson, 12. “By raising money and helping towards the wish list, it feels good to know that we are doing something to help the kids feel better in some way possible.”
