Jailer pleads guilty to stealing inmate's cash

Sept 21, 2010

A former jailer pleaded guilty Monday to stealing $1,250 from an inmate to pay his car note and cell phone bills.

Kornicki Antonio Hendrix, 28, was fired from his job at the South Fulton County Regional Municipal Jail in Union City after he confessed to the July 2008 crime, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office said. Following his guilty plea, Hendrix was sentenced to five years probation, and he must complete community service and pay the money back.

Hendrix was working as an intake officer when suspect Antoine Strickland was booked in, the DA's office said. Strickland had $1,250 and a watch at the time of the arrest, and the items were given to Hendrix for processing.

But when Strickland tried to access his money to post bond, the money wasn't there, District Attorney Paul Howard's office said. Strickland filed a complaint with the jail, and the theft was turned over to Union City police after surveillance video identified Hendrix as being responsible, Howard said.

Hendrix confessed to the crime after being identified as the suspect, and Union City repaid Strickland.

Hendrix was charged with theft by taking and violation of oath by a public officer. He is prohibited from taking another job in law enforcement, Howard said.
