The man accused of binding bank employees and a customer with duct tape while he stole $140,000 in cash could face life in prison for the crime.

Cepeda Broughton, 40, was indicted Monday by a federal grand jury for the March 9 heist. Broughton, of Lithonia, faces charges of armed bank robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said.

"This defendant allegedly robbed a Conyers credit union at gunpoint, terrorizing the bank employees and customers, who were ordered into a back room of the bank and bound with duct tape," Yates said in a statement. "The defendant then allegedly led Conyers police on a high speed chase that resulted in multiple car accidents before his vehicle was forced off the road."

Broughton allegedly entered Georgia’s Own Credit Union on Sigman Road with a handgun and ordered three bank employees and a customer into a bank room. He then forced a fourth employee to open the bank vault and give him all of the cash inside, Yates said.

Another customer in the bank called 911 and Broughton left the bank in a stolen car, Yates said.

Broughton then led Conyers police on a chase on Sigman Road and Ga. 138, causing multiple wrecks. He then allegedly ran from the vehicle, twice pointing his gun at officers before he surrendered.

If convicted, Broughton could face life in prison, Yates said.
