Mayor Reed and officials from Invest Atlanta, the city's economic development arm, welcomed a five-member team of senior IBM experts to Atlanta as they kicked off a three-week visit as part of IBM's Smarter Cities Challenge grant. The team -- including experts in urban planning, technology strategy and transportation assessments -- will help develop a new economic development strategy for the city, with special emphasis on job creation and global competitiveness.

The approximate value of each Smarter Cities Challenge grant is about $400,000. Atlanta won the grant in March. It is one  of 33 cities across the globe to receive the grant this year.
