Police have one suspect in custody and are looking for another man in connection with a brutal home invasion that left a mother shot in the head and critically injured and her toddler son beaten, WSB TV is reporting.
After an extensive search through the woods of rural Chattahoochee Hills, local police and officers from surrounding jurisdictions arrested Donovan McCoy Tuesday and continue to search for 17-year-old fugitive Antoine Wimes, reports said.
The 22-year-old mother, Nikki Neely, underwent surgery Tuesday and is in critical condition, according to Larry Parrott, director of public safety for the agency.
Her son, Javante, was beaten and suffered severe lacerations, but the 1-year-old was conscious when police arrived at the Barnes Road house in south Fulton around 9 p.m. Monday.
Parrott said family members called police when they found Neely on “the kitchen floor next to a small puddle of blood.”
Chattahoochee Hills police chief Damon Jones told WSB that the two men forced their way into the home demanding money. When Neely didn’t produce any, she was shot.
Wimes was out on $250,000 bond for murder and aggravated assault charges from February, Fulton County jail authorities said.
He reportedly broke off his ankle monitor before the Monday night incident.
Parrott said law enforcement officers from other agencies were so disturbed by the attack on the boy that investigators from LaGrange, Fulton County and Union City police departments and deputies from sheriff’s offices in Fulton and Coweta came to Chattahoochee Hills to help the 18-month-old agency.
“It was a collaborative effort,” Parrott said.
One person is in custody but police are looking for other suspects, he said.
Parrott declined to release any names or other specifics. Police have said robbery was the apparent motive in the attack.
