Three men who robbed a Newton County bank on Thursday and then led police on a chase into neighboring Rockdale County are in custody after crashing their getaway vehicle, authorities said.
The incident began shortly before 1 p.m. when the trio robbed the Bank of North Georgia on Salem Road, according to Lt. Keith Crum of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
A citizen saw the bandits fleeing the bank and gave police a description of their vehicle and the direction it fled, Crum said. Newton County sheriff's deputies spotted the vehicle and gave chase and eventually were joined by police from Rockdale County and the city of Conyers.
The pursuit ended with a crash in Conyers, and police took the three men into custody. One was injured and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta. The suspects' names and charges were not immediately available Thursday night.
A Newton sheriff’s deputy also was hurt while responding when his car collided with another vehicle not involved in the incident, Crum said. The officer sustained only minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
