The Hampton City Council named Charles Coney the new city manager in an April 9 special called meeting.
Coney was most recently the assistant county manager for Macon-Bibb County and also is currently a city councilman in Fitzgerald. The move was approve with a 4-0 vote and two council members absent. The council had previously narrowed its search to four candidates, according to a spokesperson, and Coney was chosen after completion of an extensive background and personal interviews with references and co-workers on all candidates. Coney was previously a special assistant to the chief administrative officer for Bibb County Board of Commissioners and was the chief administrative officer for the Ben Hill County Board of Education.
The Fitzgerald website lists Coney as the councilman from the 2nd Ward whose seat is not up for re-election until November of 2021.
