Hall County health officials issued a rabies alert Tuesday after a raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Hall County Animal Control recently received word that a rabid raccoon made contact with a dog in the Ransom Free Road area, according to a Hall County news release. On Monday, the raccoon was sent to Decatur's Georgia Public Health Lab where virologists uncovered the animal tested positive for rabies. This is the fourth confirmed case of 2016.

Officials will post positive alert signs in the area where the rabid raccoon was located.  Residents of the area who have noticed behavior changes in their pet,  can contact Hall County Animal Services at (770) 531-6830 or call Hall County Dispatch at (770) 536-8812 during evening hours.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domestic pets for rabies.

Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter for $10 Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1688 Barber Road, Gainesville.
