Gwinnett woman indicted on charges from I-85 bus crash

A Lawrenceville woman who hit a bus with 13 developmentally disabled adults on I-85 last December was indicted this week on 15 charges from the crash, according to Gwinnett County Court records.

Joy Christine Wilson was indicted on nine county of serious injury by vehicle and two counts of DUI, court records show. She also was indicted on three counts of hit and run and one count of reckless driving, according to court records.

Wilson was arrested after her 1999 Honda Accord hit the back of a small bus operated by Norcross-based Just People Inc. The driver of the bus lost control, causing the vehicle to skid across several lanes of I-85 and then flip on its side. It collided with a guardrail and then righted itself.

The wreck, which happened just north of Pleasant Hill Road, shut down I-85 northbound for about three hours.

Three people were sent to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Nine others suffered serious injuries and two had minor injuries.

Witnesses told police Wilson was driving erratically, changing lanes frequently to bypass cars.

Wilson pulled over briefly following the accident, but left before police arrived, Gwinnett police spokesman Officer Brian Kelly said at the time. An hour later, she was apprehended as she attempted to return to the scene.

A family member convinced her to turn herself in, Kelly said at the time. She was held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond until a January hearing.
