Gwinnett Schools Public Schools officials are investigating a Monday morning  bus accident that happened when students were being transported to standardized testing.

The accident occurred around 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Rockbridge Road and Rockbridge Way in Norcross. A special needs school bus bound for Camp Creek Elementary was rear-ended by a Lilburn Middle School bus carrying 38 students.

Ten students on the Lilburn Middle bus received minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The driver, who school officials have not yet identified, was ticketed by Gwinnett County Police and taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Camp Creek Elementary bus driver, bus monitor and the two students on board did not complain of injuries, but were treated at the scene as a precaution, police said.

Both bus drivers were temporarily relieved of duties under district transportation protocol, said Jorge Quintana, spokesman for Gwinnett County Schools.

“The school system is investigating the accident,” Quintana said. “Both drivers won’t be driving while that investigation is going on pending the outcome.”

The accident occurred on the day Gwinnett Schools begins administering the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test. Another bus picked up students so they could make it to school on time, Quintana said.

The 10 injured students, who complained of back pain and other injuries, did not have to take the exam Monday.

“Their testing was excused for the day,” Quintana said. “They will be making it up later during the testing period.”
