Gwinnett Police are advising the public to be wary of counterfeit bills, especially during the approaching holiday season.

The warning comes on the heels of a theft Wednesday at a Target store near Gwinnett Place Mall, where a couple used counterfeit money to buy expensive electronics.

The purchases included two flat-screen televisions, paid for with 32 counterfeit $100 bills totaling $3,200.

Gwinnett Police said the suspects altered $5 bills to look like $100 bills. The man is described as a black male about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 250 pounds, wearing blue jeans, a black coat and a Washington Redskins cap. The woman is described as a black female, about 5 feet 2 inches tall and 130 to 140 pounds. Her hair was straightened and pulled into a pony tail or bun, and she wore a gray sweat coat and carried a pink purse.

The pair were seen leaving in a dark-colored conversion van with a raised roof and a light-colored horizontal stripe down the sides.

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter asked citizens to "please be vigilant checking all large bills for their built-in security features." On $100 bills, these include a magnetic strip on the left of Benjamin Franklin's head and a marking on the strip that reads "USA 100." Also check to ensure that the watermark is of the same president designated on the front of the bill.

Anyone with information regarding the suspects in Wednesday's theft is asked to contact the Gwinnett County Police Department at 770-513-5357.
