Work is starting to bring another pair of Ga. 316 interchanges to life in Gwinnett County.

Gwinnett’s Board of Commissioners approved last month an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation to fund preliminary engineering work for interchanges at Hurricane Trail and U.S. 29/Winder Highway near Dacula. The county will use 2017 SPLOST funds to match the $1.93 million or so that GDOT plans to spend on the initial phase of the project.

The goal of the new interchanges is to reduce congestion and improve safety.

“I appreciate the state’s commitment to working with the County to make the much-traveled Ga. 316 corridor safer,” District 4 Commissioner Marlene Fosque said.

Construction of the new interchanges might not begin until 2023. But other similar projects are also in the works.

Another interchange over Ga. 316 at Hi Hope Road is also in the preliminary engineering phase. The county began construction on yet another interchange at Harbins Road earlier this year and could finish work in 2022, officials said.
