Gwinnett Medical Center was once again accepting emergency room and trauma patients Saturday,  a spokeswoman said.

Computer problems had forced the hospital to divert both emergency room and trauma patients to other hospitals Friday.

A system-wide computer virus had slowed patient registration and other operations at the hospital’s campuses in Lawrenceville and Duluth since Wednesday.

"Our technical monitoring systems have shown no evidence of the virus since yesterday afternoon," hospital spokeswoman Beth Okun said Saturday, adding that the computer system has been stable since 3 p.m. Friday.

During the computer problems, the health system had been forced to switch back to paperwork. Patients were waiting longer at registration on Friday, and the virus also was affecting departments such as the pharmacy, radiology and labs.

A system of runners were dealing with a variety of tasks, such as running orders down to the pharmacy or delivering X-rays to doctors.

"Gwinnett Medical Center has transitioned from paper records to an online system in our Emergency Departments," Okun said Saturday. "As a result, we are no longer on trauma by-pass and are accepting all patients."

During the computer problems, the hospital was still treating patients in emergency situations but was asking people with minor ailments, such as sore throats or sprained ankles, to contact their regular providers, Okun said.
