Authorities in North Carolina are investigating the death of a Gwinnett County man whose body was found in the trunk of his burning car.
Police and firefighters in Charlotte found William P. Henderson’s body Monday after dousing a predawn car fire at an apartment complex near the city’s airport.
Henderson, 42, of Snellville, had been shot, said Jean Wassenaar, a spokeswoman for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Wassenaar said detectives do not believe Henderson was shot where the vehicle was located, and are still trying to determine where the shooting occurred.
Henderson left his home last Tuesday on a trip to Columbia, S.C., Wassenaar said. He was driving his gray 2004 Infiniti G35, the same vehicle that was torched Monday morning.
Henderson was expected to return home to Gwinnett County on Friday, but when he didn’t show up and could not be contacted by phone, he was reported missing by his girlfriend.
According to the missing persons report filed with Gwinnett police, Henderson had gone to Columbia to “sample music tracks,” but apparently never made it to his intended destination.
