A Duluth-based animal health company has completed a $76 million Athens expansion.

Boehringer Ingelheim doubled the capacity of the Athens facility, which produces vaccines for pets, poultry and wildlife, according to a company release. The facility, which now employs 440 people, produces 150 different types of vaccines and “several hundred million doses” annually.

The expansion added 50 jobs at the Athens facility. Those positions are “mainly in manufacturing, quality control and maintenance,” according to spokesman Mark Bixler.

The company marked the finished project Wednesday with a visit to the Athens facility by U.S. Sen. David Perdue.

“Boehringer Ingelheim’s products help support Georgia’s critical agriculture industry and I personally want to congratulate the company and its employees on completing this expansion in Athens,” Perdue said in a press release.

The company is based in Duluth and has operations in Gainesville in addition to the expanded Athens facility.
