Griffin-Spalding County schools selected one of their own to be the 10,500-student district's new superintendent.

The school board voted unanimously to appoint assistant superintendent for administrative services Curtis Jones Jr. the next superintendent, school officials announced Thursday night.

Jones replaces Superintendent Jesse Bradley, who retired May 31 after 12 years with the district.

Board member James "Pete" Graham, chairman of the superintendent search committee, said Jones was the "best overall fit for our community, our school system and our children."

Jones is a retired U.S. Army officer and certified financial planner. From 2001-2005, he served as principal of Griffin High School.

He has a master of business administration degree from Albany State University, a specialist degree in educational leadership from Lincoln Memorial University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Jones was one of three finalists, including Spalding High School principal Derrell Jeffcoat and former Carrollton City Schools superintendent Ronnie Williams.
