-- Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that John Lampl was accused of taking kickbacks.
A grand jury has indicted the former city manager of Morrow, in Clayton County, stemming from a project that was supposed to revitalize the area around Southlake Mall, Channel 2 Action News reported.
John Lampl is accused of lying to a grand jury, telling them the Olde Town Morrow project of shops and restaurants was paid for and debt free.
“This project took millions and millions of dollars from the taxpayers’ coffers, and they still are obliged to pay millions and millions of dollars,” said Clayton District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson.
The 16-count felony indictment also accuses Lampl of entering into contracts for construction, tree removal, and relocating old houses for the project without advertising or receiving sealed bids, Channel 2 reported.
In an interview with Channel 2 last summer, Lampl disputed allegations of wrongdoing, calling them “defamatory” and “malicious.”
Authorities took Lampl into custody Friday night.
