Ex-Grady doc who videotaped sex with boys receives lengthy prison sentence

A former Grady doctor who videotaped himself having sex with two boys and tried to seduce a third child was sentenced Monday to 26 years and eight months in federal prison.

Adam Wayne Lebowitz, 50, was convicted in February of producing child pornography and attempting to coerce and entice a minor to engage in unlawful sex acts.

The emergency room doctor first came to law enforcement's attention in 2006 after he sent a series of sexually suggestive e-mails and instant messages to a 15-year Coweta County boy. An undercover investigation followed, culminating with Lebowitz's arrest in the driveway of the boy's home in November 2006. Coweta deputies found condoms and sexual lubricants inside his car, according to evidence collected by the U.S. Attorney's office.

A search warrant was obtained for Lebowitz's Decatur home where investigators seized two computers containing video recordings of the Emory University medical resident engaging in sexual activity with two underage boys -- one in north Georgia and another in Massachusetts. The former physician then posted images from the sex tapes online.

He was indicted in 2007 after pleading guilty to sex abuse charges but the plea was later voided and the case went to trial. Lebowitz, who is HIV positive, was supposed to identify other potential victims so they could be warned of his condition.

He had been arrested a few months earlier trying to flee the country. An anonymous tipster spotted him waiting for a flight to Hawaii and alerted police. He was turned over to DeKalb authorities, where he was wanted on a road rage-related charge.

As a federal inmate, Lebowitz is not eligible for parole.
