The shining sun gave way to a partly cloudy sky. It’s humid this Father’s Day and downpours are popping up in the metro Atlanta area.

The current temperature in Atlanta is 80 degrees.

"There is a 40 percent chance of showers and storms," Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Monahan said a front will move across the area early this week.

While there will be downpours, it’s not a wash-out and there will be some sun on Sunday, Monahan said.

Meteorologists are watching two areas for tropical development, one unusually early in the central Atlantic and another in the northwest Caribbean. Both have a high chance of developing in the next 5 days.

The northwest Caribbean system will have to be watched closely, Monahan said.

"If it can strengthen/organize fast enough, it would be a threat to come more into the eastern Gulf and more directly threaten our weather," Monahan said.

A slower developing system would trend farther to the west. Either way, next week’s rain chances from mid-week on are highly dependent on the future of this system.

Rain chances run at 60 percent on Monday and 40 percent on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a trough overhead, temperatures will be just a bit cooler, mainly in the mid 80s.

Summer begins just after midnight on Wednesday.
