Driving to work Friday morning, Jamie Contreras saw a horrific sight: A limping, bleeding dog trying to get out of a garbage bag and off the roadway near Buford.

She and another driver, Les Burgess, stopped on Hamilton Mill Road near Thrasher Road, turned around and went to help.

Burgess gathered the Boston Terrier on the side of the road. They waited 20 minutes for animal control, then took the dog to Animal Hospital of North Gwinnett.

"It made me realize there are really heartless people out there," said Contreras, 29, an insurance agent from Winder. "This person easily could have taken him to the dog pound or let him go where he'd have been found. To actually throw him out of a car is pathetic and it made me feel sad. Sad and angry."

Dr. David Crossett, who is treating the 3-year-old dog, said the dog "was beat up pretty bad."

"His whole left side, all the skin is pretty much gone from road rash, and his right eye is ruptured. We're going to remove it.

"But I think longterm he's going to be OK."

The dog is under heavy sedation now.

"He was hurting pretty bad," Crossett said.

AJC readers flooded the Animal Hospital of North Gwinnett with calls as soon as the story appeared online, and have pledged to cover the more than $1,600 worth of treatment the dog will need in coming weeks.

Crossett and Contreras are asking those wanting to adopt the dog to call Animal Hospital of North Gwinnett at 770-945-9555.

"My prayer is we can find someone who has got the money and the heart who can take this obviously abused dog and give him lots of TLC," Contreras said. "Bring him back to a healthy life."

The dog did not bear a tag or have a microchip. Contreras and Burgess, 43, did not see who threw the dog onto the road.

"I'd love to find out who did it," Crossett said. "If anybody saw that on Hamilton Mill, I'd love to know that."

Pictures of the dog supplied by Burgess were considered too graphic to be used in this article.
