About 200 Georgia Power workers were in Ohio and Maryland Monday, helping to restore power in a region where severe summer thunderstorms last week knocked out electricity to millions.
Around 2 million homes and businesses from North Carolina to New Jersey and as far west as Illinois were still without power Monday morning, and utility officials predicted the outages would last for several more days in some area.
The 200 Georgia Power employees left on Saturday to help restore power in hard-hit Ohio and Maryland, Georgia Power spokeswoman Carol Boatright said.
Some 445,000 customers were still without power in Ohio Monday morning, and at least 469,000 remained in the dark in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Boatright said many Georgia Power crews were also busy in southeast Georgia, where 21,000 customers were without electricity Monday after strong storms moved through the Savannah area Sunday night.
