Several current Georgia college students and recent graduates won prestigious scholarships this week.
Three were among the 35 selected as Marshall Scholars and will pursue graduate degrees in the United Kingdom.
Ariel Eckblad, the 2010 valedictorian from Spelman College, will study at the Royal Holloway of London. Shivani Jain, a senior majoring in sociology at Emory University, will attend University College London. Nick Wellkamp, a Georgia Tech graduate, will study economics at the University of Oxford.
"It's a tremendous honor, a blessing and a dream come true," Wellkamp said. "The chance to study at Oxford will be exciting, challenging and intellectually enriching as it will allow me to gain a global outlook on the challenges facing humanity through exposure to British, European and other international perspectives."
A recent University of Georgia graduate, Betsy Katz, was one of 12 people selected for the Georgia J. Mitchell Scholarship program, which awards a year of post-graduate study in Ireland. Katz will study intercultural studies at Dublin City University.
Tracy Yang, a UGA senior, was one of 32 U.S. students to win the Rhodes Scholarship. She will attend Oxford and work toward a master’s degree in global health science.
