GDOT celebrates 50 years of the Perimeter with traveling exhibit

To commemorate the 50th anniversary Tuesday

of the opening of I-285, the Perimeter, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced a pop-up exhibit at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.

The exhibit will be on display through Saturday on the lower level of the mall near Dillard's. It will let guests "view historic photos of I-285, witness the evolution of mobility along the corridor, and interact with a reproduction of I-285 built by LEGOLAND Discovery Center of Atlanta," according to a GDOT announcement.

The traveling exhibit is presented by GDOT, LEGOLAND, the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, the Atlanta History Center and HNTB, a transportation consulting firm. Viewing is free during mall hours. Information: https://bit.ly/2B69ymc

To view an Atlanta History Center gallery of historic I-285 images: http://www.dot.ga.gov/ds/285ann The Perimeter, a 64-mile loop encircling Atlanta, officially opened Oct. 15, 1969 as a mostly rural interstate with only two lanes in each direction, GDOT said. Today, the much-widened I-285 is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the U.S., handling more than 2 million vehicles a day.
