A Georgia state prison inmate killed a fellow inmate, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Friday.

Johnny Lee Johnson of Monroe died Thursday while at the men-only Telfair State prison in central Georgia, the GBI said. Johnson had been in the prison since November, according to the state Department of Corrections.

"We’re treating this as a homicide," Todd Lowery, GBI special agent in charge, told the AJC. "We’re in the process of investigating it, but no charges have been filed."

Johnson, 25, was serving a 20-year sentence for a voluntary manslaughter conviction. He was convicted in Hancock County in 2009.

The GBI did not identify the inmate accused in the killing.
