The Fulton County Commission has voted to terminate a $7 million per year wastewater treatment contract with the Cauley Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Johns Creek, despite pleas from Commissioner Liz Hausmann and a parade of her constituents who sought a delay to study the implications. The plant provides gray water used for irrigation, and the board heard protests from company officials and representatives of several golf courses and a church. Hausmann noted that the state Environmental Protection Division has asked the county to reconsider.

An agitated Finance Director Patrick O’Connor retorted that the relationship with Cauley Creek was always intended to be temporary until the completion of the Johns Creek Environmental Campus, which has far more treatment capacity than the area needs. He said the closure will save the county $6 million per year, which will allow for 4 percent reductions in north and south Fulton residents’ water and sewer rates.
