Military members and veterans, medical professionals and first responders can take home a new pet for free any day in  July. All others can adopt any animal for $20 all month, the shelter said. Kittens can be adopted in a two for $20 special — kittens are born at high rates in the summer, leading to high shelter populations.

Dogs normally have a $90 adoption fee and cats typically have a $30 adoption fee. When you adopt from the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter, the fee includes a veterinary exam, vaccinations and spay or neuter procedures.

The shelter had 140 animals in its custody as of Monday, July 2. In addition to dogs and cats, the shelter also had a turtle and a rabbit.

The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
