The Labor Day weekend proved deadly on Georgia’s public waterways, with four drownings recorded from Friday to Monday.

The number of Georgians drowning while swimming, boating and fishing has continued to rise year over year despite steps by the state to encourage water safety.

The four deaths over the past weekend included:

• Quincy Larae Finch, 35, of Gainesville, who drowned at Lake Lanier Monday;

• Bailey Dean O'Shields, 21, a college student, who drowned at Lake Lanier after becoming separated from a personal watercraft. His mother told the AJC he had a seizure;

• And a boy and a girl, both under the age of 12, whose names have not been released and who drowned at West Point Lake while swimming Sunday.

Read the AJC's full report on drownings, including those in swimming pools, on myAJC.com.
