Funding for programs that have older students helping their younger peers with reading, teach essential social skills to be successful and encourage scientific experimentation were among 19 grants totaling $60,000 awarded recently by the Forsyth County Education Foundation.

The 2019 grants, funded by the Duck Dive for Education, included $5,000 for “Mountain Movers: Building a Love of Reading Through Personalized Partnerships and Student Agency” at Coal Mountain Elementary School. The program pairs upper-level student volunteers with lower-elementary students to help the latter with reading skills.

“Second Step” at Cumming Elementary School, a social skills program that teaches children how to make friends, manage their emotions, solve problems and deal with peer pressure, received $4,700.

“Seeds of Science” at Johns Creek Elementary School, providing students with “a month-long, hands-on science experience” growing live plants in their classrooms and an herb and spice garden in the cafeteria, got $3,080.
