The Forsyth County Board of Education has approved buying 42.5 acres on Castleberry Road near Cumming for an elementary school to open in August 2022.

The as-yet unnamed school, designated elementary No. 23, is planned for Castleberry north of Bethelview Road. According to documents filed with the Georgia Department of Education, the facility would house about 1,100 children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten through fifth grade.

The school is intended to relieve current and future overcrowding at Whitlow, Vickery, Shiloh Point and Midway elementary schools, district officials said. The initial sales contract offer presented to the school board was $77,950 per acre, or $3.3 million total. The Martha L. Conway Revocable Living Trust is the seller.

Voters approved funding for the land and school in a May 2018 bond referendum, officials said. After the land purchase is completed, the district will present plans to Forsyth County government and hold a public participation meeting. Information: Tim Amerson, tamerson@forsyth.k12.ga.us
