Harold Dean Propst, a former chancellor for the University System of Georgia, has died. He was 78.

An aide staying with Propst discovered he had passed away when she checked on him Monday morning, said John Millsaps, university system spokesman.

Propst was selected as chancellor in July 1985 and served until January 1994.

The system was teaching about 206,000 students when he left. Today the 35-college system enrolls about 314,000 students.

Propst was born in North Carolina and retired from education in 1994 after a 34-year career in teaching and administration.

He also worked as an administrator at Armstrong State College in Savannah and taught college English at a couple of schools.
