A flat tire helped speed a man wanted for attempted murder to jail, Gwinnett police say.

The case against Mario Riera-Gonzalez, wanted by Lawrenceville police in a June machete attack, was bound over to Gwinnett Superior Court Wednesday.

Mario Riera-Gonzalez, 31, was charged with DUI and other traffic offenses Aug. 8 after a Gwinnett police officer observed him driving a red pickup truck with a flat tire on South Norcross Tucker Road, according to a police report.

The driver, who'd left a nightclub at about 5 a.m., admitted to drinking and failed several roadside tests.

While being transported to jail, he attempted to hide two large diamond rings in the police car that may link him to thefts in Florida.

Riera-Gonzalez is charged with criminal attempt to commit murder for the attack on an employee at Maxx Car Service on Scenic Highway. According to a Lawrenceville police report, Riera-Gonzalez attacked Alexis Gonzalez-Rangel June 2. The victim, cut on the arm and ear, managed to get the machete away from his attacker. The victim said he was attacked because of an earlier dispute the men had had about Gonzalez-Rangel's wife.

Riera-Gonzalez remains in the Gwinnett County jail with no bond.
