A fire Friday afternoon that destroyed a vacant building in Douglasville may be related to construction taking place as part of a renovation.

Firefighters continued to pour water on the blaze more than an hour after the initial report, according to Wes Tallon, director of communication for Douglas County.

The fire — at 5840 Bankhead Highway — is at the site of a former indoor firing range, but it has been closed for some time, Tallon said. There was no ammunition inside the building, which is a total loss.

The first call came in at 4:15 p.m. and engines were on the scene six minutes later. At 5:30, 24 firefighters were still on the scene, battling both the heat of the fire and from the weather outdoors.

"We are making sure that our firefighters do not end up suffering," Tallon said. "We don't want to lose a firefighter."

Bankhead Highway, also known as U.S. 78, is closed between Industrial Access Road and Brown Street.
