Starting with next year’s freshman class, high school students in Fayette County will have their grade point averages and class ranks calculated differently.

The Board of Education voted 5-0 on April 23 to enact a 5-point grading scale for Advanced Placement classes, a 4.5-point scale for dual enrollment classes and a 4-point scale for all other courses; no bonus points will be awarded. Class rank will be reported by percentiles, rather than numeric order, for the top 5, 10, 25 and 50 percent. The changes were made at the recommendation of a committee comprising teachers, parents, students and college admissions officials.

Calculations for selecting valedictorians, salutatorians and junior marshals have not been finalized but are expected to remain “consistent.”
