Fayette County has decided to restore three of the middle school sports programs that were cut to save money during the recession.

The Board of Education voted 5-0 Monday to approve the $28,500 necessary to bring back 7th grade boys and girls basketball and 7th grade girls volleyball starting next fall. Of that, $24,700 will pay teacher supplements for three assistant coaches at each middle school, and another $3,800 will pay for team transportation to games.

The cost of referees will be paid for using gate fees. There are no plans to reinstate middle school wrestling and softball because eighth graders have been incorporated into the high school teams.
