Fayette County employees will get an extra paid holiday on Dec. 31 as a goodwill gesture from the Board of Commissioners.
At the urging of Chairman Eric Maxwell, the board voted 4-1 on Dec. 13 to give non-emergency and non-jail staff the additional time off because New Year’s Eve falls on a Monday.
“I don’t think it’s a big thing to ask to recognize what the county employees have done for the past 365 days,” said Maxwell.
Fayette employees recently maintained regular hours when other counties curtailed theirs because of bad weather. County Administrator Steve Rapson said the additional holiday would cost Fayette about $5,000-$6,000, which prompted Randy Ognio to vote no.
City employees in Fayetteville already have Dec. 31 off, but those in Peachtree City do not.
