Newly elected Fayette County District 3 Commissioner Edward “Edge” Gibbons has apologized for remarks he made recently regarding citizen input at county meetings.

On Feb. 14 when the board was considering an agenda item regarding time limits on public comments, Gibbons said that although citizens may express their views at meetings, “it’s not going to affect my opinion.” Gibbons also said that public comment was “an expectation” but “not a right.”

After being criticized by residents in print and online, Gibbons made a statement at the Feb. 28 meeting.

“I was wrong in many ways,” he said. “I definitely want to hear from the public.” Gibbons said he is open to getting information via email, phone calls, texts and personal meetings, and vowed to consider all comments “respectfully and thoughtfully.”
