Falling tree kills man in south Fulton

John Thompson III spent more than 20 years cutting trees with his family in Chattahoochee Hills.

But the one he was cutting on Monday struck and killed him, said police.

Thompson, 60, was out with a crew on Hutchensons Ferry Road near Ga. 70. A crew member noticed just before 11 a.m. that he was missing, Chattahoochee Hill Police Chief Damon Jones said.

The crew told police the tree fell on Thompson. No one else was around, Jones said.
Thompson's family owned the logging business.

The crew was cutting in the Redwine community, in the corner of south Fulton bordered by Coweta and Carroll counties.
