Midtown gyro spot re-evaluated after employee fired over health check

UPDATE: The restaurant was re-inspected Monday and received a 93/A. An inspector observed "equipment soiled with accumulated grease" and noted that the restaurant didn't have a copy of the latest inspection report.

ORIGINAL: A gyro restaurant failed a recent health inspection, Fulton County records show.

Gyro Bros on Peachtree Street scored a 55 following the Nov. 1 evaluation. Scores below 70 are considered failing. Its prior score, from December, was a 96.

According to the report, kitchen staff were observed “touching raw chicken and going on to touch ready-to-eat food without washing hands."

Officials also reported a food worker without a hair restraint and raw chicken stored over ready-to-eat food in a cooler.

A cook who caused most of the problems was immediately let go and replaced with an employee from another location, according to owner Gray Saleh. The family-owned business has multiple locations across metro Atlanta.

Saleh said the mistakes that caused the “embarrassing” score are being fixed.

“We try to keep the score as high as possible, because that’s what people deserve,” Saleh said.

Follow-up inspections are generally completed within 10 days of the original evaluation.
