Strong thunderstorms forecast for Friday night and Saturday morning could delay road construction projects on several metro Atlanta interstates this weekend.

Lane closures that were planned include I-285 northbound south of Chamblee Tucker Road in DeKalb County, where two left lanes were to be blocked from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

In Fulton County, the two left lanes of I-285 in both directions between Riverside Drive and Ga. 400 are scheduled to be closed from 9 p.m. Friday and through 5 a.m. Monday; and in Clayton County, one or two lanes of I-75 in each direction between Tara Boulevard and Mt. Zion Road were expected to be closed during those hours.

Events that could cause congestion downtown and in Midtown this weekend include Hawks games on Friday and Saturday nights at Philips Arena, a Georgia Tech basketball game at noon Saturday at the arena, a Sunday night concert at the arena by Romeo Santos, the Atlanta Blues Festival Saturday at the Atlanta Civic Center and the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival Saturday at Atlantic Station.

Friday night’s storms are expected to taper off Saturday morning, with clearing skies and much cooler temperatures forecast for the afternoon. Sunday will be sunny but cool and windy, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said.
