Forsyth County’s top elections official thinks by week’s end about 50 percent of the county’s 138,000 registered voters will have cast early ballots.

Elections and registrations chief Barbara Luth says as of Monday, 48,350 votes had been cast at early voting locations and some 4,500 absentee ballots had been sent out with about 2,900 of them returned. She says that’s running well ahead of the totals for the last presidential election.

In 2012, 45,361 early ballots were cast and about 3,200 absentees returned.

Luth says the county has historically seen a high percentage of early voters, due both to its status as an outlying county with sometimes lengthy commutes, and because county officials have campaigned heavily for voters to cast ballots early.

This is the final week of early voting prior to the Nov. 8 election.
