Speed likely was a factor in a crash that killed a 22-year-old man early Saturday in Coweta County, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Just after 1 a.m., John Hughes, driving a 2015 Corvette, ran off Walton Road, according to the GSP.

Hughes’ car struck several small trees before it struck a large pine tree, which caused the car to land on its roof, the GSP said. After coming to a stop, the car caught fire.

Officials aren’t sure if the impact of the crash or the fire killed Hughes.

A passenger, 18-year-old Matthew Goodwin, escaped the car with injuries that were not life-threatening, the GSP said. He was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital and was listed as stable.
