The Downtown Connector reopened in Midtown Sunday after railings falling from the 17th Street Bridge shut a portion of the roadway Saturday night.
No one was injured when multiple pieces of railing fell from the bridge onto northbound lanes at about 11 p.m., officer Kim Jones with Atlanta police said shortly before midnight.
Georgia Department of Transportation officials said a single bolt failed and caused 170 feet of railing to fall.
One or two lanes may be closed at varying times Sunday as repairs are made. Baseball fans headed to the 1:35 p.m. Braves-Cubs game may want to take an alternative route.
A portion of the bridge is closed, but two lanes of traffic are open in each direction.
Northbound lanes were closed overnight from I-20 to the 17th Street bridge, the DOT said. Southbound lanes of the Connector at the bridge were also closed as a precaution, halting traffic for miles in both directions.
Reggie Lee told the AJC he saw something falling from the bridge as he was driving on the Connector and knew he had to stop, but didn't want to cause a major pile-up. Lee said his "driver's ed" instincts kicked in.
"I knew I had to brake slowly, try to give people behind me time to stop," Lee said. "No one hit anybody."
Lee said the debris landed about 10 feet away from his car, but missed falling on any vehicles.
A driver on the bridge said the metal rails fell almost like dominoes to the roadway.
The yellow bridge, which opened in March 2004, links Atlantic Station to Midtown.
