The doctor who pleaded guilty to illegally dispensing drugs to professional wrestler Chris Benoit, who later killed his wife, son and himself in June 2007, will be sentenced Tuesday in a U.S. District Court in Newnan.

Dr. Phil Astin III, of Carrollton, faces up to 20 years in prison and $1 million in fines.

Astin admitted he knew he was violating federal law by illegally writing prescriptions for 19 patients. Federal prosecutors said the illegally prescribed drugs included Percocet, Oxycontin, Xanax and Lorcet. Local prosecutors said Benoit and his wife, Nancy, were patients of Astin.

The bodies of Chris, Nancy and 7-year-old Daniel Benoit were discovered June 25, 2007, at their Fayetteville home after officials with World Wrestling Entertainment requested authorities check on the family. Chris Benoit, 40, is believed to have strangled his 43-year-old wife and smothered his son before hanging himself.
