A glitch in payroll processing caused many workers in the Division of Family and Children Services to not get their checks deposited as expected last Friday.
A data entry error by the payroll vendor is being blamed.
Payroll funds that were sent to employees’ bank accounts should have been available as of Friday, but vendor SMI “incorrectly scheduled the availability of those funds to employees for May 30, a Saturday,” state Department of Human Services spokeswoman Ashley Fielding wrote in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The funds were to be made available to all affected employees by Monday, at the latest, according to the email.
In addition, DFCS provided staff with a form letter that they can give to their banks if any problems result, including penalties for insufficient funds, Fielding said. The email said SMI “has committed to reimbursing employees for related late/bounced check fees in the event that fees are not waived.”
“The state will not be out any money. The vendor made a commitment to cover any costs,” DFCS spokeswoman Susan Boatwright said.
She said about 6,000 staff were potentially affected, but that it isn’t known yet whether any were hurt by the delay.
She added that no reports had been received about any employee not receiving their pay on Monday.
