A SWAT situation at a DeKalb apartment building ended peacefully late Wednesday morning when a man facing charges for firing a weapon surrendered to police.

The incident, which prompted officials to lock down a nearby elementary school, began around 5:30 a.m. when officer responded to the Tempo Cabana apartments on Buford Highway at Curtis Drive.

DeKalb polie Capt. Don Tracy told the AJC that once officers arrived and heard additional shots being fired, they set up a perimeter around the apartment building and called in the SWAT team.

Around 10 a.m., SWAT negotiators made contact with the six people, including two children, who were inside the apartment, and they came out peacefully, Tracy said.

One man from the apartment is facing charges for firing the shots, which Tracy described as “more of a celebratory gunfire.” That man’s name was not immediately released.

SWAT officers used the rear parking lot of  nearby Woodward Elementary School as a staging area.

DeKalb schools spokesman Walter Woods told the AJC just after 8 a.m. that school officials were able to get students inside the school through a front entrance, then placed the school on lockdown.

Cross Keys High School, which is across the street from Woodward, was not affected by the incident.
